HRNP would like to thank the ward councillors, Karen Buck and the Deputy Mayor for coming along and leading the event; and Harrow Road Community choir for their lovely festive singing!
If you would like to join the choir in the new year please email allsingchoir@gmail.com

We need your views!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009
The open space by Costcutters on the corner of Elgin Avenue and Harrow Road used to be known as the Prince of Wales Junction…. Now its looking beautiful and hosting a lovely market, we think it needs a bit of a name change. We’d like to standardise the way we refer to the area around the market so everyone knows where events and opportunities are taking place – and we need your help!

Please give us your views below….

Maida Hill Winter Festival

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
December 12, 2009
3:00 pmto7:00 pm

The Maida Hill Winter Festival was a great success, despite the – very seasonal – rain and chill. It was great to get a glimpse of Santa as he distributed presents around the Market with his band of helpers, and to join in with a rousing chorus of carols sung by the Community Choir and friends. It was even ok that all our toes went numb, as we were warmed by complimentary mulled juices and mince pies. But, as always, the best moment of all was after the countdown, as the fabulous Christmas lights (funded by Harrow Road’s Ward Councillors) came on. The mythical button was pressed by not one but two special guests- Fasial Islam (Channel 4 News) and The Lord Mayor of Westminster joined us in celebrating the festive season. Special thanks also to Karen Buck MP, and councillors Ruth Bush and Guthrie Mckie, who came along to raise a glass and support the event.

Caribbean Flavour

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Saran Green at maida hill market

Performance Poet Saran Green

On Saturday 24th October, despite some decidedly non-Caribbean weather, Maida Hill Piazza was transformed into a Caribbean island. Think steel pans, think plantain cake, fried fish and jerk chicken, think Carnival. We were joined by four amazing performance poets, who shared their unique brand of Caribbean-inspired poetry with us and got everyone creatively inspired. It was great to see how many young people came down to listen and connect with the performances.

Flamboyan Carnival group showcased some of their amazing headdresses from this years Notting Hill Carnival, and launched an exhibition of photographs of this years celebration at the Maida Hill Cafe Gallery. And, if this wasn’t enough, they also ran craft and steel pan workshops from their stall on the market. It was great to hear the sounds of the steel pans throughout the afternoon – first in he hands of the professionals and then as a group of intrepid young people attempted to master them – and succeeded!

Stallholders really got into the mood, selling special Caribbean treats, cakes, soup and meals to keep us warm, while the Tell It Like It Is campaign ran a stall providing information on local activities, support and involvement opportunities for visitors and passers-by alike.
