Maida Hill Winter Festival

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
December 12, 2009
3:00 pmto7:00 pm

The Maida Hill Winter Festival was a great success, despite the – very seasonal – rain and chill. It was great to get a glimpse of Santa as he distributed presents around the Market with his band of helpers, and to join in with a rousing chorus of carols sung by the Community Choir and friends. It was even ok that all our toes went numb, as we were warmed by complimentary mulled juices and mince pies. But, as always, the best moment of all was after the countdown, as the fabulous Christmas lights (funded by Harrow Road’s Ward Councillors) came on. The mythical button was pressed by not one but two special guests- Fasial Islam (Channel 4 News) and The Lord Mayor of Westminster joined us in celebrating the festive season. Special thanks also to Karen Buck MP, and councillors Ruth Bush and Guthrie Mckie, who came along to raise a glass and support the event.

WECH Community Festival 2008

Friday, July 18th, 2008
July 13, 2008

On Sunday July 13th WECH held the community event of the summer… the WECH Community Festival!

We all had a great day in the sunshine, listening to some good music, eating tasty food from the huge barbeque, and watching some great performances (including the much loved kids clown!).
Information and taster workshops were available from a whole host of stalls, from Flamboyan community arts group, to Fernhead Rovers football club. There were some epic races on the spacehopper track, with a few spectacular collisions – although we can reassure you that no spacehoppers were harmed… Henna and facepainting added some colour to visitors from as far away as south and north London, while the live art board and kids tent saw some budding genius and created some amazing masterpieces.
Harrow Road Neighbourhood Partnership ran a community information stall, to help residents get a better idea of what we do and ask questions about upcoming activities. We had a great reaction to the competitions running throughout the festival, which invited everyone to suggest new ideas to improve the community, and young people to fill in photo and local info quizzes; all for a chance to win one of three IPod Shuffles. Our ‘Greatest Acorn’ of an idea was won by a local girl aged only 12, proving that local young people have some great visions for their community. The winners of the other quizzes will be announced to all entrants by post once the photos have been judged. A local exhibition of the entries wil take place over the summer – watch this space for further details!
